A 2024 opening on a lake that had not seen a major new lakefront kitchen in years is worth flagging on its own. What makes it more than a restaurant is what is attached. Rustic Ridge is a family-owned bar, grill, and campground on 24 wooded acres in Friendship, with large 60x40 wooded campsites and beachfront access to Castle Rock Lake ideal for boating, fishing, kayaking, swimming, or jet skiing. Walk out the door and you are at the water.

Two adjacent businesses under the same roof matter for how a resident uses the property. Costa Ricky's is the walk-to beach bar with cold drinks and live music through the summer. Addie's Ice Cream Shop serves hand-scooped Cedar Crest cones and sundaes. That gives one address a full lake day: swim in the morning, lunch at the grill, drinks at the tiki-style beach bar in the afternoon, ice cream on the way back to the campsite or the car. It is the closest thing on Castle Rock to a one-stop shoreline.

For homeowners on the Friendship and Arkdale side of the lake, the practical upshot is a shorter drive for guests who want a night out that does not require crossing to the Juneau County side. For homeowners across the water, it is a new destination worth pointing a boat at on a calm evening.

The dock-up detail most guides skip

Restaurants come and go on this lake. Fuel does not. If you are planning a day on the water that will end with dinner, you are also planning a day that will need a top-off. Castle Rock Citgo is the gas station and convenience store with live bait on the way. Big Papa's Pontoon Rentals maintains the working shortlist of dock-accessible fuel and food together for a reason. A boat that runs out of gas at 7 p.m. does not make it to the Friday fish fry.

For the boater who owns rather than rents, the useful move is to keep a personal shortlist that pairs a fuel stop with a food stop on the same run, and to know which docks stay usable in a stiff south wind. Shipwreck's dock is sheltered enough that a moderate chop is not disqualifying. Rustic Ridge's beach is more exposed, which is a feature on a calm July night and a problem on an August storm evening.

The second is how Rustic Ridge's second full summer settles in. New kitchens usually spend a season finding their menu. By late July, the specials board is a better indicator of what the kitchen is actually good at than the printed menu is.

Neither of these requires a plan. They require the kind of attention a resident pays without thinking about it, which is exactly the advantage of living here instead of driving up for a weekend.
